CHAPTER TEN
Flaws are what other pets have. Your pet’s eccentricities are signs of character.
Winnie
Mom stared at the mouth of the glowing green tunnel that filled most of the doorway. “What is this?”
“The northern lights,” I explained. “The science club gathered some of them and made them into a slide.”
“Your science club did all this?” Mom asked in amazement.
“Well, our science teacher, Sir Isaac, advised them,” I admitted.
“Sir Isaac?” Mom asked. “You have British nobility too?”
I thought Mom had more than enough to handle at the moment, so I tugged at her arm. “Come on, Mom. Do you want to talk about the teachers or do you want to have fun?”
Mom pointed at the side where the usual stairs still showed. “I think I’d rather use the steps instead. Awk!”
Mom waved her arms as she fell into the tunnel, leaving wide stripes of sparkling green behind her as she disappeared.
I looked over my shoulder at Miss Drake, who quickly tucked her paws behind her. “Oops, how clumsy of me.”
I threw myself headfirst down the soft-sided tunnel, sparks flying as I flew by.
“Mom, are you okay?” I shouted.
“Woo-hoo!” Mom screamed back. “This is better than a roller coaster!”
Mom and I landed with a whump in a six-foot-tall pile of moss. We sank into it, the earthy smell filling our noses.
I heard a whooshing sound as something barreled down the tunnel. Miss Drake shot out hind paws first, but instead of falling into the moss, she drew in her legs and tumbled across it like a ball. She came to a clean stop—like she’d been landing on a thick bed of moss all her life.
Standing up, she began brushing herself off. “Most entertaining.”
“Show-off,” I muttered.
“I see no reason to hide my candle under a bushel basket.”
She pulled Mom and me to our feet, and we high-stepped through the spongy moss toward one of the little doors on the side of the pit. Then we waited until all my friends joined us.
The tables in the cafeteria-auditorium were gone. In their place, booths had been set up, and the ceiling and walls pushed into other dimensions to form a giant cavern.
Mom’s eyes grew as big as saucers, and her mouth opened in a little O. While I’d been doing and seeing so many wonderful things with Miss Drake, it had been hard not to share them with Mom. Now I had a chance to show her some of the magic.
“Let’s try one of the magical wonders,” I said, taking her hand and leading her. “We learned all about Colossus of Kush in magic class. The real one was a quarter-mile high. A powerful wizard made spirits carve it out of a hill, Jibal et Tarabel, in just one night.”
Mom craned her neck back, looking at the huge thirty-foot statue of a man in a kilt and a bullet-shaped hat. Several kids were climbing up the pegs set into the sides.
“Shouldn’t they be wearing safety harnesses?” Mom asked.
One of the girls in a mountain climbing club sweatshirt came over.
